The key these days to get access to farm fresh fruit and vegetables for optimum health and if you are keen to do this a home vegetable patch is the key.<\/p>\n<p>There is nothing better than growing your own fresh fruit and vegetables in your back year for your exclusive use whenever you like! If you are looking to make a vegetable garden consider a raised one that you can easily make yourself.<\/p>\n<p>There are many benefits of a raised vegetable garden such as easier access to fresh fruit and veges, less bending, greater yield due to the higher grade soil you utilise to plant your garden, great for drainage and of course it looks great!<\/p>\n<p>If you are looking to set up a raised vegetable patch, here are the tools and materials you will need to make it a reality.<\/p>\n<p>Tools<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Circular saw<\/li>\n<li>Cordless drill<\/li>\n<li>Tape measure<\/li>\n<li>Safety gear \u2013 eyewear<\/li>\n<li>Shovel<\/li>\n<li>Mallet<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Materials<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Treated pine deck boards 19 x 140 mm<\/li>\n<li>Treated pine stakes or uprights 19 x 19mm or what ever you can find<\/li>\n<li>Exterior decking screw<\/li>\n<li>Potting mix \u2013 to fill your vegetable patch once it is complete<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Here are the basic steps to make your raised vegetable garden.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.toolmateshire.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/3-1-570x422-6710422.jpg\" alt=\"3-1-570x422-6710422\" \><\/p>\n<h2><small>Step 1<\/small><br \>\nnSource all your materials<\/h2>\n<p>Firstly, you need to work out what materials you want to use for your garden bed, be it a treated pine, sleeper or even a weather resistant 2 x 4, it is up to you and your outdoor space.<\/p>\n<p>For our raised garden we are going to utilise treated pine decking boards, as they are extremely durable, strong and weather resistant. In addition, they are treated to keep away the termites which could reap havoc on your home if you use untreated wood!<\/p>\n<h2><small>Step 2<\/small><br \>\nnCreate a space for your bed<\/h2>\n<p>The size of your garden is largely dependent on the space you have available in your garden. As such it is always best to measure out your length and width of the area \u2013 even mark it with spray paint.<\/p>\n<p>With your space marked, it is now time to dig out a small garden bed. Going down about 10cm into the soil, dig out the area your garden bed will be sitting you, allowing you to get a good view of the size and lay foundations.<\/p>\n<p>Clear away any excess grass, soil or plant matter so you can create the best, cleanest garden bed possible.<\/p>\n<h2><small>Step 3<\/small><br \>\nnCut your pieces to shape<\/h2>\n<p>The trick to a smooth DIY project always is to have as much as possible prepared, cut to shape and ready to go. In this instance, measure the size of the garden bed \u2013 remembering to ensure that you a squared up at all time.<\/p>\n<p>Cut your length &amp; width pieces to size, depending on how high you want your garden bed \u2013 we have used three boards high \u2013 you need to ensure you have enough pieces cut. In our case, we required six larger pieces and six smaller.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re looking for a DIY project, ToolMates provides an accessible platform so you can connect with other people in your local area who are willing to lend or borrow the tools you\u2019re not using for a small fee.<\/p>\n<h2><small>Step 4<\/small><br \>\nnCreate your stakes<\/h2>\n<p>In our example, we used a circular saw to create the stakes from scratch \u2013 remember you can buy these in numerous shapes and sizes from the hardware store! For us, it was just as easy to get exactly what we wanted by cutting the steaks.<\/p>\n<h2><small>Step 5<\/small><br \>\nnPrepare the panels<\/h2>\n<p>In our case, we prepared the panels to make everything easier. Setting the two end stakes up, we secured the boards to the stakes ensuring they are square, level and screwed in.<\/p>\n<p>After raising the first side up, we completed the same process on the opposite side and then the two shorter size panels.<\/p>\n<p>With all of the panels created, we lifted (with two people) the panel up into place and pushed each end into the soil, using a mallet to get it through the tough soil at the end of the process.<\/p>\n<h2><small>Step 6<\/small><br \>\nnStart the construction<\/h2>\n<p>With the first panel in place, we followed the same process for the other side. We worked on opposite sides so it made it easier to secure the loose boards on the shorter sides when you had both longer sides erect. <strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><small>Step 7a<\/small><br \>\nnSecure everything into place<\/h2>\n<p>Now that the walls are all in place and sturdy, we secured the sides by hammering in another 1 or 2 support stakes in the ground, just to ensure there was no bowing or lack of integrity when we put the soil in and started planting.<\/p>\n<h2><small>Step 7b<\/small><br \>\nnSeal or paint your garden bed (optional)<\/h2>\n<p>If you are using a non-treated wood or your garden\/home has a colour scheme, it is always easier to paint it or seal the wood before you fill it with soil. Remember if you haven\u2019t used a treated wood, you need to consider how you are going to protect yourself and your property from termites.<\/p>\n<h2><small>Step 8<\/small><br \>\nnFill and plant out<\/h2>\n<p>Now the structure is complete; we set about filling our vegetable garden bed with soil. This was a process as ours was quite large. It is always best to use high quality potting or vegetable garden mix to ensure your plants are getting the maximum amount of nutrients and they have the best shot of establishing themselves.<\/p>\n<h2><small>Step 9<\/small><br \>\nnEnjoy your own vegetables!<\/h2>\n<p>There is nothing more satisfying than eating home grown vegetables and herbs every night. Knowing what you are feeding your family is from your backyard. With your newly established raised vegetable garden, now you can.
