The temperature’s rising and everyone’s itching to get outside to soak up the sun and the summer air.
But if you don’t have anywhere to go because your backyard is looking a little worse for wear, it’s time to put your gardening gloves on.
With some elbow grease and a bit of magic (i.e. your own hard work), you can turn your backyard on its head and create a space you’ll love coming home to.
Since nothing beats a summer barbecue and lounging in the shade with a good book, you need to make a space that allows for this and more. And you can’t do that without a good backyard transformation.
If you’re ready to read about our 5 favourite tips to get your backyard ready for summer, keep reading!
We’re excited to help you turn those sunny days into unforgettable memories.
While there’s no such thing as the perfect backyard, there is such a thing as the perfect backyard for you.
To find what you’ve been looking for and ensure your backyard’s the envy of the neighborhood, start by following these 5 simple tips:
First things first – you can’t adorn your backyard without getting the foundation in order. A clean backyard is the cornerstone of a memorable outdoor space loved by all who spend time in it. What’s great about this tip is that cleaning is free and can give you a nice workout.
Roll up your sleeves and tackle the weeds that have taken over the lawn or your garden beds. After pulling some out, you’ll notice how just a bit of weeding goes a long way in making your yard look presentable and inviting.
Mow the lawn and pick up any clippings lying around your walkway. Then, grab a broom and sweep away the leaves and debris on your patio from the months of painful negligence.
Lastly, don’t forget to hose down your outdoor furniture and give any garden ornaments a good wipe. Don’t gloss over this step – it’s crucial for moving forward.
Depending on the layout of your backyard, there might be more room left for experimentation beyond the constraints of the lawn. For example, if you have a patio, look for ideas to decorate that along with the rest of the space. Don’t halt your creativity on the steps of your patio.
One easy way to make the most of this space is to add greenery, especially if it hangs from beams or the ceiling. In a way, you’re extending the backyard inward and creating a natural transition into your home. If you don’t want more plants to water or care for – consider faux hanging plants.
This is a good alternative if you’re not ready to give your decor too much attention. Plus, artificial hanging plants stay vibrant all year round and can come with UV resistance, so you won’t have to bring them inside when the weather turns.
Hang them from your patio roof and create a makeshift canopy in a few minutes. You can mix and match different types of faux foliage by adding various stems for more variety.
You’ve cleaned your backyard and hoisted up a few nice hanging plants, just to not see anything after dusk. Well, if no one can see it, that wasn’t the best use of your energy, was it?
But instead of moving your events to daylight hours when you can clearly see the fruits of your labor, why not just install new lighting? When the sun goes down, lighting can make or break the ambiance of your yard.
So, start by replacing any old, dim bulbs with bright, energy-efficient LED lights. Or, if you’re going for a more whimsical approach, add string lights and drape them across your patio or between the trees. If you have a path in your yard, see if there’s any way you can line it with lights so that your visitors can walk around without using echo-location for navigation.
What’s a summer backyard without a good grill ready to fire up delicious meals? Not much in our books!
Before you invite your first cohort of family and friends over for a BBQ, give your grill a thorough inspection and cleaning. Remember, it’s been laying dormant for a few months at least, so check the gas lines and grates to ensure everything’s in working order.
Remove any old grease and food residue from the grates with a wire brush and some warm soapy water before putting any new food items on it. This is the most important scrub you can do because it’ll improve the taste of your food and ensure safe cooking.
If you have a charcoal grill, don’t forget to also empty the ash from the bottom. And as a precaution, clean your drip trays even if they look okay on the surface.
Your backyard is spick and span, so it’s time to celebrate with a get-together!
Invite your friends, family, and neighbors for a fun barbeque-filled day in your new space. Spend half of the time bonding with your guests and use the remaining to show them around the yard and wait for compliments.
We’re kidding, of course. Though we still think your visitors will appreciate a tour around your new outdoor space for inspiration.
Set up comfortable seating areas with weather-resistant cushions and blankets and prepare a simple menu for the grill. Keep everyone cool with a variety of refreshing drinks and add some games to keep guests entertained.
In the end, the beauty of the backyard is what you and your guests make of it.
It’s important to have a tidy, clean yard, but it’s still worth little if you don’t invite people over to share it with. Your backyard is an extension of your home and should serve as a place to create memories, enjoy good times, and relax.
So, get started on your backyard projects and make full use of the summer season!
