If you’re short on space but you love gardening, a vertical pallet garden is a great option. Create a green and enticing space when you have no garden beds available or limited planting space in your backyard. Easy to build and maintain, a vertical garden is perfect for green thumbs who want to grow their own herbs and up-cycle old materials, and works whether you live in the city or suburbia.

In this article, we explore how you can create a vertical pallet garden using some old pallets, a few bits and pieces you have laying around, and a whole lot of creativity.

Materials needed to create your pallet garden shed include:

–   Wooden pallet

–   Plants and pots

–   Potting soil

–   Metal wire

–   Wire cutters

–   Wood screws

–   Drill

–   Paint

–   Paintbrush or small roller

Step 1: Purchase all your flowers or herbs

Gather all your flowers or herbs and lay them out ready so you know how many pots you need to incorporate into your vertical garden. Try to source pots of all shapes, sizes and colours.

Step 2: Prepare your pallet for your plants

Next, it’s time to paint the pallet so that it stands out and breathes some life into your garden area. You can paint each individual slat a different colour and get creative, or just choose a contrasting colour to give your garden area some pop.

We painted ours nice and bright. Lay down your pallet so that it dries properly and use outdoor paint to ensure it stands the test of time.

Step 3: Wire all your pots up

Add some wire around each pot by wrapping it a few times until it is secure and the tightly twist the wire leaving long strands of wire on each pot.

Step 4: Get hanging

Take your coloured and wired pots and start placing them on the pallet, wiring them into place over the horizontal slats. Once you have twisted on your pots make sure the ends of the wire are super secure so your pot can’t fall down. Heavy pots may not be a great idea, but you can place them at the base of the vertical garden so that you have all your greenery in one spot.

If you would rather you can drill these pots onto your pallet rather than affix them with wire, however using wire means you can move them when and if necessary. Also, if you have a bigger space, you can put a few pallets together and screw them in one longer line so that you have a super sized vertical pallet garden or even use zip ties to hold them together in place.
